about

The Orchids' third and final album for Sarah Records picks up where Unholy Soul left off, adding to the gorgeous guitar-led lyricism of their early releases myriad new ideas dreamt up in the studio or out on the dancefloor. James Hackett murmurs softly amid the electronic babble of Avignon and A LIving Ken And Barbie's kaleidoscopic samples, while guest vocalist Pauline Hynds, taking lead for once, turns A Kind Of Eden into a glorious piece of languid summery pop that in another world would've topped any number of hit parades. The beautiful Prayers To St Jude, meanwhile, returns James's voice exquisitely to centre stage, buoyed this time by a simple acoustic guitar, while Obsession No 1 and Beautiful Liar see John Scally's amps turned back up to 10.
