about

The Orchids' first full-length LP for Sarah Records added a depth and lushness to the band's sound, with producer Ian Carmichael playing an increasingly important role. And though the aching guitar-led melodies and lyricism of Lyceum still dominate tracks like Women Priests And Addicts and the gorgeous Long Drawn Sunday Night, keyboards and samples and a sense of the dancefloor are rarely far away, fuelling the gentle euphoria of The Sadness Of Sex (Part 1) and Peaches' ecstatic rapture ("get yourself high, feed your soul, set yourself free..."). Elsewhere, Frank de Salvo and Dirty Clothing showcase John Scally's guitar, while You Know I'm Fine contains echoes of Lyceum's Blue Light in the bruised rawness of James Hackett's vocals.
